UN Referendum for Tamils’ Rights to Self-Determination: Towards Geneva and Beyond? |
[ Friday, 21 December 2012, 05:27.03 PM GMT +05:30 ] |
|
The 22nd session of the Human Rights Council will commence on the 25th February to 22nd March 2013. This will be a crucial period for the Eelam Tamils as they believe justice will be served for the crimes committed against them. But at the same time Tamil’s demand are not constrained to justice against war crimes but also a permanent political solution. |
At present, there are two prominent issues pertaining to Eelam Tamils are being discussed:
A call for an International Investigation to the War Crimes, Crimes against humanity and Genocide.
A call for a just and permanent political solution to the decade’s long ethnic conflict.
It is a known fact that justice for war crimes will not necessarily lead to a fair solution for the Tamil national question. While everyone focuses on the war crimes committed during the final stage, long cries for the Eelam Tamils for a permanent political solution seem to be ignored conveniently. A strong voice is vital to address the Tamil national question at this time.
Taking the above facts into account, the National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) along with International Council of Eelam Tamils (ICET) is organizing a conference on March 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Geneva to reflect the political demand of the Eelam Tamils to the international arena.
